šChapter 37: This man must be a succubus!
Chongwan District.
Shen Shuyi had never imagined that his eldest brother would enjoy mountain off-road racing, let alone that the person his brother liked would be an Alpha who drove such cars.
He had always thought of his eldest brother as outstanding but rigid, distant from everyone. From his school years onward, he had always ranked first, graduating from the Alpha Military Academy, which was just as prestigious as Huada’s Alpha Academy. If he had not returned to inherit the Shen family business, his most likely path would have been to enter the military and eventually work his way into the central command.
But Shen Shuyi did not know much, since he rarely interacted with his elder brother.
His eldest brother did not concern himself with family matters, and his second sister was the same.
As for Shen Shuyi, he had never even met his own mother. She had died in childbirth when he was born.
Shen Shuhan had met her, but he had been so young that his memories were faint. Even so, he still knew more than Shuyi did.
He explained that the mother of their eldest brother and second sister had no real affection for Father Shen. Their marriage had been arranged for family interests. Because their pheromone compatibility was low, they had soon begun sleeping in separate rooms. After giving birth to the second sister, she seemed to suffer from postpartum depression, and one night she ended her own life in her bedroom.
Postpartum depression.
At first glance, that illness did not seem to be connected to pheromones, but Shuhan had once secretly analyzed it with Shuyi. He reasoned that the low compatibility and long-term estrangement must have affected her mental and physical health as an Omega.
Which meant her death might not have been solely because of postpartum depression.
And with their father remarrying only a few years later, it was no wonder that the eldest brother and second sister had grown distant from him and the rest of the family.
Shuhan once said that if it were him, he too would resent Father for marrying again so quickly after their mother’s death.
Just as both he and Shuyi disliked Aunt Ye and Shen Xingyao.
Hearing this, Shuyi could better understand his elder siblings. It also helped him see family ties more clearly and lightly from a young age.
This time, for the mountain racing competition, the Shen family was surprisingly complete. Everyone came except the second sister.
Shuhan, concerned about Shuyi’s recent troubles, spotted him in the stands and immediately pulled him aside.
Thanks to Shuyi, the family was staying at Xie Cheng’s resort villa. Shuhan had originally intended only to see him, not to watch the race, but when he heard that the luxury suites had mountain views and infinity pools overlooking the entire Chongwan scenery, he found himself tempted.
Of course, he was not the type to be impressed by something as simple as an infinity pool. Absolutely not. He was only there for his little brother.
“You told me before that the man who assaulted you in D City was Director Zhang from Huanyan Pharmaceuticals. I went digging recently. Guess what? The news says that Zhang is an Enigma! And he didn’t just assault one Beta. After he was arrested, he confessed to a long list of victims. My god, he’s a complete pervert!”
Shuhan, wearing a mask and sunglasses to avoid being recognized, spoke in a hushed tone as they hid in a corner. “Do you know this? An Enigma’s pheromones can affect Betas, turning them into Omegas. It’s shocking. Everyone thought it was just a rumor, but this scandal confirmed it’s real!”
Shuyi had also seen the news these past days. That director had committed multiple crimes and was sentenced to prison for life, but there were whispers that some research groups wanted to keep him for studies on Enigma-related sex and gender research.
Those matters, however, were classified. Ordinary people could never know more than rumors.
Meanwhile, Huada’s affiliated psychiatric hospital had been in upheaval, its management purged and reshuffled. Director Wang was exposed for a fake degree, humiliated publicly, and the scandal had even sparked public distrust in the medical system.
For an ordinary intern like Shuyi, though, none of that mattered. His life went on as usual.
What did stand out was when Chen Xin approached him once, asking if he knew any of Xie Chenzhou’s secrets. Shuyi did not know their exact relationship, so he said little. But it was Chen Xin who had hinted to him that some research groups wanted to protect that director.
Shuyi had no such influence. Even if people really wanted to shield the man, he could do nothing. But Chen Xin’s words had carried another meaning. Perhaps he too knew that Xie Chenzhou was an Enigma.
For Xie, the fewer people knew the truth, the better. Unless Xie chose to reveal it himself, Shuyi would never tell.
But his third brother…
Shuhan looked at him with worry. “I’ve been having nightmares these past two days, dreaming that glands started growing on the back of your neck, turning you into an Omega. It’s not that being an Omega is bad, but you were born a Beta. What would you do if that really happened?”
Shuyi hesitated, then leaned closer. “Third Brother, I hadn’t planned to tell you… but since you’re an Omega, you have experience. I don’t know who else I could ask. I really have developed glands. I wanted to ask you about some Omega matters.”
As he spoke, Xie Chenzhou was standing not far behind them, watching closely. Shuyi had already discussed with him whether he should tell Shuhan. Xie had said, “It’s your choice.”
That was his way of giving permission.
He had hidden his identity for so many years, surely for reasons of his own. For him to allow Shuyi to share this secret with another meant a great deal.
Aside from being controlling and obsessive at times, he had never truly restricted Shuyi’s choices.
“What did you say?!” Shuhan caught sight of the bandage on the back of Shuyi’s neck. Realizing his nightmare had come true, his eyes rolled back, and he fainted on the spot.
Shuyi panicked.
He had not expected his honesty to hit his brother so hard. With so many people in the stands, and given Shuhan’s public identity, exposure would be bad. Shuyi quickly called for help. Xie Chenzhou alerted the staff, and with discretion, they quietly whisked Shuhan away to Xie Cheng’s villa.
In the luxury suite that Shuhan had secretly coveted, only the two of them remained. Shuyi pressed his philtrum, fed him water, nearly calling an ambulance before Shuhan finally stirred awake.
The first words out of his mouth were, “Where is that Zhang director now? I want him assassinated!” He threw off the blanket, about to get out of bed.
Shuyi quickly calmed him. “It wasn’t him.”
“Not him? Then who was it?” Shuhan froze.
“It was… it was Mr. Xie.”
Shuhan went silent.
Shuyi grew flustered. “But Mr. Xie is different from Zhang. He’s a good man.”
“You-!” Shuhan’s eyes rolled as though he might faint again. “Good? He turned you into an Omega!”
“You were born a Beta. You identified as a Beta. And now… you’re not even a normal Omega. I can’t smell your pheromones at all!”
His expression hardened. “What will you do from now on? Wear a bandage every day? People will find out sooner or later. How will you explain it?”
Shuyi stammered, “This gland is only temporary…”
“Temporary? Then tell me, do you know how to remove it? What happens after? And even if you try, would Xie agree?”
Lowering his voice, Shuhan pressed, “He’s an Enigma. You know what they’re like, don’t you?”
“If he doesn’t allow it, then you’ll be stuck like this, a half-disabled Omega, forever. Can you accept that?”
Shuyi had never thought that far, and now he fell silent.
“How did this happen?” Shuhan asked again. “If I remember right, you spent an entire week alone at home with him afterward. Did you take precautions? Do you even realize Omegas are far more likely to get pregnant than Betas? Ordinary protection doesn’t work! And even though you’ve grown glands, your body is still half Beta. Did you two form a permanent mark? Because listen, Betas can get pregnant even without permanent marking. Do you understand that?”
“I…” Shuyi’s face paled as his hand instinctively covered his stomach.
“Call him in,” Shuhan ordered, taking a deep breath. “Bring Xie Chenzhou in here.”
Although fear flickered in him after learning Xie was an Enigma, he was still determined to confront him for Shuyi’s sake.
Shuyi obeyed, spraying pheromone-blocking mist around the room before summoning Xie.
A short while later, Xie emerged from the room, calm as ever.
“Mr. Xie, what did my brother say to you?” Shuyi asked anxiously.
“He asked if I had taken care to prevent you from conceiving. I told him no.” Xie’s eyes met his. “But I did take precautions for myself.”
“…What?” Shuyi blinked.
“Contraceptives made for Alphas. Enigmas can take them too. You should know that.”
“You mean…?” Shuyi remembered them. “But those pills have to be taken beforehand, and they’re very damaging to the body. Mr. Xie, we…”
Most of their intimacy these days had been sudden. Unless he had taken the pills daily, it wouldn’t have worked.
“I take them every day,” Xie said. “Every day I want you. But I know you don’t want to get pregnant, and ordinary protection won’t work for you now. So I have no choice but to take them daily.”
Shuyi’s face flushed. He lunged forward to cover Xie’s mouth.
“Stop saying that!” he burst out, mortified enough to want to dig a hole and bury himself. “I get it, it was careless of me. I didn’t realize ordinary protection wouldn’t work anymore. Please stop taking them. We’ll hold back from now on… I’ll hold back.”
So now his body was double the risk for pregnancy? Thank goodness he had told his brother. Omegas received specific health education in school, lessons the other genders never got. They were more cautious, more aware.
Shuhan had been right.
But Xie… Xie had even thought of this before he had. And Shuyi, who wanted to switch into clinical medicine, hadn’t. The realization left him embarrassed.
He needed to note this down, to adjust his future plans.
While he was lost in thought, Xie suddenly seized his hand, pulling him close until their chests pressed together. The scent of his pheromones grew stronger and stronger.
“Don’t restrain yourself,” Xie said, eyes fixed on him. “I took the pill today. I’ll take it tomorrow too. Since I already have, Shuyi, don’t waste it.”
“Wait… hold on…” Shuyi tried to push him away. “Mr. Xie, calm down, this is the hallway…”
“Please,” Xie whispered by his ear. “You can keep our agreement, but after everything we’ve done, don’t strip me of even this right.”
“Wait… listen…” Shuyi tried to summon his reason. He had to explain that the drug should not be taken so often, that it was for Xie’s health…
Forget reason!
Why was Xie kissing him again?
This man was a succubus!
